Does Homework Matter?

Doing effective homework helps academic growth

Good homework does matter, but so does a great teacher. Homework should be relevant to what is being learned. The struggle is that most parents do not know what to do to help. Many parents are willing, but do not know “what in the world the teacher is giving this homework for.”

Homework should be done with the support of the family. In class, the student is learning with other students and with an adult. When the student gets home with the homework, it is can be confusing and they are alone. Every child and family is not able to make that shift.

I would suggest that you partner with other parents and students in your school who are in “that” teacher’s class. Now that virtual learning is more prevalent, you and other parents of students should connect in a Zoom meeting to just do homework together. You need a sounding board maybe at least once a week. Homework does matter, but the new strategies for teaching “the stuff we learned as kids” are totally different. If you are not a teacher, sometimes it is hard to bridge the learning gap. The solution is near. It might be the child’s teacher, other students or parents in the class, a tutor, or a parent conference.
